Hello everyone, Is it possible to start a PsyToolkit experiment with a key press instead of clicking on that red box containing the "start message" (or to just get rid of that starting screen altogether)? I am currently designing an (auditory) experiment for blind listeners, and it would be much easier to only use the keyboard for the entire experiment (using the keyboard to navigate through the questionnaire items works just fine). Thanks for any advise! Best, Florian

I understand. The reason why there is a mouse click is that it ensures that the canvas area is focused.
I can build in an option not to have the start with mouse, but I am not exactly sure how easy that would be to do. I will put it on the wish list. It might take a few weeks before I can have this implemented, is that okay?

Thank you very much for your quick response! I look forward to seeing a solution for this. Unfortunately, most blind participants are currently not able to run the PsyToolkit tasks by themselves. Best regards, Florian

Sure, I understand the situation and this is something that I want to have fixed in the next minor version 3.0.1, which will come out in the beginning of June.
Please feel free to email me on psytoolkit@gmx.com if there are other barriers that make it hard to use PsyToolkit for this group. For now, I will try to add two features
1. Ideally make it possible to entirely skip the red box, but I am not sure if that is technically possible
2. If I cannot get rid of the red start box, I will at the very least make it respond to mouse or key press.

Dear Prof. Stoet, I just saw that a new version 3.0.1 is now available. However, I could not find an option to start the task with a key press instead of a mouse click (or to skip the red box). Maybe this option is not listed in the scripting syntax yet? Best regards, Florian

Hi Florian,
It turns out I can very easily implement this and will do it as soon as possible. Hopefully this week, but definitely by end of next week. Follow this up personally with me via psytookit@gmx.com.

This now works in the upcoming version 3.1.0, which is currently in testing mode.

Dear Prof. Stoet,
I was wondering whether it is already a possibility to leave out the start message in the 3.2.0 version? We are currently designing a motor learning task with multiple tasks after each other and we would like to let the tasks follow each other without the start message. I know you can program multiple tasks in one experiment, but this isn't a possibility for our tasks.
Thank you in advance for your advise!
Best regards, Anke

No that is not possible. The start message is used for loading loading things (it is not recommended, because under certain conditions, the red box clicking is necessary to give the browser permissions to play media files with audio -- this cannot be circumvented). You can at least use the option not to have to press a key/mouse (with advanced settings).
